A New Era for Local Governance in Groote

The new Groote Archipelago Regional Council is now in full operation, marking a significant step forward for local governance and Aboriginal-led decision making in the region.

On Thursday 17 April, a ceremony was held during the first Council meeting to mark the formation and swearing-in of the seven newly elected councillors where they received their certificate of election from Minister Steve Edgington and in the presence of Deputy CEO of Housing, Local Government and Community Development Brent Warren and Executive Director Leslie Manda, and Groote Archipelago Regional Council CEO Shane Marshall.

During the meeting, councillors shared their dedication for driving meaningful change, with a focus on creating local jobs, improving essential services, engaging young people, preserving cultural traditions, and nurturing the wellbeing of their communities.

The establishment of the council reflects our commitment to listening and responding to the ideas and solutions put forward by those most connected to the land. Many of the newly elected councillors are respected Aboriginal leaders who hold deep connections to their culture and communities.

Their presence ensures that Aboriginal voices are not just heard but are actively leading community development and shaping a stronger future for Groote.

Following its separation from the East Arnhem Region in September 2024, Groote’s first Regional Council marks a significant step in the Northern Territory Governments commitment to promoting local governance and strengthening community leadership.

With three wards – West, Central and East – the Council’s structure is designed to foster more focused and meaningful decision-making, allowing the Council to respond directly to the needs and priorities of each community.
