A sweet Territory tradition: Christmas cakes for senior tenants

Published

The festive season is here again, bringing warmth (and something sweet) to senior public housing tenants across the Northern Territory.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Community Development is proud to continue its annual Christmas cake deliveries to eligible households.

This initiative is made possible through the hard work and coordination of the Lions Club and the Rotary Club, who organise the preparation and delivery of cakes to Department offices in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Casuarina. From there, our regional teams help ensure each eligible home receives a Christmas cake, along with a festive card.

With around 4,400 eligible tenancies, the program is a simple way to help senior tenants feel valued and included at this time of year. Deliveries began in early December and continue throughout the month.

Our CEO, Tom Leeming, has also been out and about delivering cakes to tenants adding to the holiday spirit in communities across the Territory.

More than a festive treat, this annual tradition reflects the strength of community partnership. The Lions and Rotary Clubs have a long history of supporting cultural, environmental and welfare initiatives, and their continued involvement helps make this program possible each year.

Whether it’s opening the door to a friendly visit or collecting a cake from a local office, these deliveries are bringing extra cheer to senior tenants across the Territory this Christmas.
