Aerial lifeline for North-East Arnhem
As heavy rainfall shuts down key roadways across the North-East Arnhem region, our teams are working together to deploy aerial deliveries of essential supplies to impacted homelands.
In April, the region was hit with over 900mm of rainfall from a persistent tropical low, leaving the Central Arnhem Road severely damaged and impassable. The closure of this key supply route created major challenges in delivering essential goods – particularly fuel, food, and water - to remote homelands across the region.
With fuel supplies critically low, our regional office initiated a collaborative effort with Laynhapuy Homelands, and other service providers, to develop an innovative plan to deliver over 8,000 litres of fuel by helicopter.
Supported by Groote Eylandt Mining Company (GEMCO) and the Anindilyakwa Sea Rangers, this aerial delivery continues to provide a lifeline to isolated communities, ensuring they have access to critical supplies while the road remains cut off. An emergency grant from our Homelands Group is helping fund the ongoing deliveries of fuel and food supplies.
This rapid, community-led response highlights the strength and resilience of the region as efforts continue to keep vital supplies flowing during this period of extreme weather.
Thank you to all involved.
