Have your say on local government reforms
Our department has been leading the way on proposed amendments to local government legislation to help councils practice good governance and engage in greater transparency and accountability. Now we’re seeking public feedback on these important changes.
As part of the second tranche of legislative amendments to the Local Government Act 2019, the local government team in our department have released detailed discussion papers that anyone can give feedback on. The papers cover a wide range of topics, with each paper focusing on specific areas:
- Part A focuses on practical amendments to delegations, procurement, and regulatory improvements
- Part B details proposed changes to superannuation payments, rating frameworks and principal member appointment, requiring more in-depth policy consideration;
- Part C is dedicated to proposed amendments to the Code of Conduct.
The local government team are keen to consult widely on these proposed changes and are especially interested to hear from the local government sector and organisations who work closely with local government, as well as the broader community.
You can share your thoughts by completing our online survey or you can email a formal submission to lglaw.cmc@nt.gov.au. To read the discussion papers and provide feedback or to help spread the word, head to Have Your Say NT.
If you prefer to give feedback in person, the local government team will be holding a series of public forums around the NT. Initial public consultations will take place in Darwin on Friday 23 May and in Tennant Creek on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 May.
More information on exact times, locations and the dates of future sessions will be made available shortly on the local government website.
