Homes for a stronger Barkly

Twelve new homes in Tenant Creek have opened their doors, increasing the housing supply for key workers and local families in need of stable housing.

Built by local construction company Habitat NT, five of the homes will be allocated to those currently on the Northern Territory’s social housing waitlist, while the remaining seven will be offered at subsidised rates to eligible working households on low to moderate incomes.

The $6.9 million initiative is part of the Barkly Regional Deal – a collaboration between the Northern Territory and Australian Governments. It also marks the first Territory- targeted project funded by the National Housing Infrastructure Facility Social and Affordable Housing.

Thanks to combined efforts of all partners, including Venture Housing’s contribution of $1.5million and the land, Housing Australia’s $3million grant, a $1.9million joint funding contribution through the Barkly Regional Deal, and a $500,000 capital grant from the NT Government, the project was made possible.

The homes are a critical step toward a more secure future for key workers who deliver necessary services to Tenant Creek and the Barkly more broadly, as well as vulnerable members of the community.

The Northern Territory Government is proud to invest in projects that not only deliver new housing but also strengthen our regional communities. This collaboration with Venture Housing and our Federal counterparts is proof that we can achieve lasting outcomes when we work together.

CEO of Venture Housing Tim Su Woo, said it’s an excellent example of collaboration between the Northern Territory Government, Housing Australia, and the Barkley Regional Council, supporting our remote region.

‘Venture Housing would like to thank all involved in the delivering the much-needed additional social and affordable housing to Tenant Creek.’

Venture Housing has also received funding under the Federal Government’s Social Housing Accelerator Payment (SHAP) to deliver three new social housing dwellings on Ambrose Street, also in Tenant Creek, with construction set to commence in the coming weeks.

The completion of these homes, designed with the needs of the community in mind, supports our boarder goals of providing responsive housing solutions that improve social outcomes and strengthen communities.
