Keys to a new chapter in Haasts Bluff
In the remote community of Haasts Bluff, 227 kilometres west of Alice Springs, three families recently received the keys to their new rental homes, providing an opportunity for reconnection with their community.
Among the recipients was single mum Griselda Giles-Lane, who stood in front of her new home with gratitude, reflecting on the journey that brought her there.
‘I waited eight years for this house and moving in marks the end of a long wait and return to my country. It’s a dream come true.’
‘This new home represents my return to the place where I was born, bringing my children and grandson along.’
Her words reflect the deeper significance of the initiative, which is part of a $4 billion investment to build up to 2,700 homes across 73 remote Aboriginal communities over the next 10-years, under the National Partnership for Remote Housing NT.
For school employee Virgillia Multa, the move into a new home means peace of mind.
Having previously lived in a dwelling partly situated on ceremonial land, Virgillia shared that her new home offers her family stability and security.
The homes are being delivered through consultation with Aboriginal people, land councils and Aboriginal Housing NT to ensure the homes are safe, secure and meet the specific needs of Aboriginal people living in remote communities.
Built by local construction companies Northern Transportables Pty Ltd and Pedersen NT, the project also helped drive investment and create job opportunities, promoting long-term growth and sustainability in the Territory.
