Maningrida New Builds: 85 Homes and Counting

Published

The remote community of Maningrida is experiencing one of the largest community housing upgrades in recent years and the impact is already being felt by local families.

Edward Mason and Rosita Ankin are among the latest to step into a brand-new 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom home, replacing an ageing house built in the 1970s and providing more space and comfort for their family.

Edward, who works as an interpreter in the community, put it simply, ‘We are very happy with our new home’.

Located 500km east of Darwin in Arnhem Land, the community is seeing significant progress under the HomeBuildNT program, which focuses on delivering fit-for-purpose homes in remote Aboriginal communities. A total of 85 new homes out of a planned 95 are now complete. In addition to improving living conditions, the initiative is also creating local employment and training opportunities, ensuring the benefits extend beyond the construction phase.

Alongside this, Room the Breathe renovations are also progressing strongly in Maningrida, with 55 out of 75 targeted homes upgraded. These renovations are all about making existing homes more spacious and functional, helping to reduce overcrowding and create more comfortable living environments for families. They are being guided by community consultation to ensure improvements are tailored to the practical needs of families.

Congratulations to Edward and Rosita – and to all those involved in delivering this important work for Maningrida.
