Moving day in Mutitjulu

Published

Five families in Mutitjulu have just stepped into newly built homes, which are providing safe, secure, and culturally appropriate living spaces and helping to build stronger futures for the local people and broader community.

This project was made possible through the HomeBuild NT program, a partnership between the Australian and Northern Territory Governments and Land Councils, designed to increase the availability of quality, affordable housing for remote communities across the Territory.

So far, Mutitjulu has seen a total of 10 new homes. With 2 more under construction, the program continues to deliver much needed housing for the community.

For Leanne, a mother of 3, having a safe, clean, and stable home means being able to raise her children in an environment she feels comfortable in. After years of moving between overcrowded and temporary spaces, she’s looking forward to building daily routines and having and a place to rest away from work.

Daisy, a respected community elder, has also spent years shifting between crowded and short-term housing. Now, not only does she have a stable home but also enough space for her carer to live alongside her at the dwelling and offer daily support.

Vicky and her son are excited to finally have a place to call their own – a family home that will allow Vicky the freedom to enjoy her gardening and host catch ups with neighbours.

Eunice and John are thrilled to grow their family in a friendly neighbourhood. This fresh start with also help them build a stable routine, paving the way for future job opportunities.

Alongside the new builds, 11 existing homes have been renovated to expand living areas and increase the number of bedrooms, improving comfort and functionality for current residents.

All this recent work has increased housing resources and significantly eased overcrowding.

The planning and delivery of the new homes were shaped by community voices, with the local housing reference group identifying workers, seniors and people living with disability as priority tenants.

Thank you to the Mutitjulu housing reference group, the Central Land Council and all contractors who worked together to deliver this project.

This work aligns closely with our goals to create safe, sustainable housing solutions that strengthen communities and enhance quality of life for all Territorians.
