On-the-spot repairs for Karama tenants
Midday Maintenance is all about making life a little easier, homes safer, and communities stronger - the program focuses on keeping tenants comfortable in their homes by fixing those small, often overlooked issues that make a big difference in daily living.
Led by registered community housing provider Mission Australia Housing Northern Territory (MAH), the program brings community events to social housing complexes where tenants can get minor maintenance issues fixed on-the-spot.
Our community housing team recently joined MAH for a Midday Maintenance event in Kwinana Court, Karama where tradespeople were on-hand to fix issues like squeaky fans, broken locks, and leaky taps.
While repairs were underway, tenants connected with the MAH team and received advice about tenancy related matters. They also had the opportunity to participate in DIY demos, where they could master repair skills and gain confidence to tackle home maintenance independently.
With a BBQ bringing everyone together, the event fostered a welcoming, community-driven atmosphere.
One tenant, who recently moved into a newly upgraded unit, expressed how happy she was with her new space, describing it as feeling like a private rental – a testament to the impact of recent improvements. Another, concerned about anti-social behaviour in the area, was thankful to receive practical advice on securing his apartment and reporting vandalism, helping him feel safer at home.
In April 2024, 251 public housing dwellings in Darwin’s northern suburbs were transferred to MAH for long term management as community housing. This included the 23 units and 7 townhouses in Karama where the Midday Maintenance event took place.
Aligned with our goals of providing safe, secure housing and strengthening communities, the program ensures tenants have access to timely maintenance support, resources to learn new skills, and opportunities to connect with their housing provider and neighbours.
