Talking Nyapa (water) in Engawala

Published

The Remote Water Team recently visited Engawala, a remote Aboriginal community about 180 kilometres north of Alice Springs, to facilitate two-way discussions on drinking water. The forum was delivered in collaboration with advisory and technical consultancy firm Ekistica and Desert Knowledge Australia.

The event was supported by approximately 60 community members along with 20 school students. Discussions focussed on water infrastructure, quality, and security. The aim was to strengthen understanding around the constraints of water in the region, how it is managed, and how two-way knowledge sharing can lead to improved management and protection of it, for the people of Engawala.

The feedback was positive, with community members expressing an increased understanding on the responsibilities of water management and supply, and who to contact if there was an issue with the water.

The visit to Engawala is part of the Northern Territory Government’s ongoing commitment to work with remote communities to improve access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water, and to facilitate shared efforts in managing and understanding this importance resource.
