Public housing safety

Everyone deserves to feel safe living in and around social housing.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Community Development has range of programs, services and supports in place to help keep social housing tenants, neighbours and communities safe. These include safety officers legislated with special powers and a working agreement with the NT Police.

Please visit Safety and antisocial behaviour in public housing for more information on these programs and services, including Public Housing Safety Officers (PHSO), reporting antisocial behaviour, tenant responsibilities and the department’s red card policy.

Public housing safety policies

Public Housing Safety Officers work with tenants, neighbours and visitors to investigate, respond to and reduce antisocial behaviour in public housing across Alice Springs, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Darwin.

This policy outlines tenants’ responsibilities for managing visitors and the support available to assist with this.

This policy assigns demerit points to tenants for antisocial behaviour, with the number of points assigned depending on the severity of the incident. Once a tenant reaches 6 demerit points, their tenancy may be terminated.

The department and the NT Police have an agreement to work closely together to respond to antisocial behaviour in and around public housing properties.
