One Year Anniversary: Territory’s first large-scale housing transfer
A year ago, 251 homes across Darwin’s northern suburbs were transferred to Mission Australia Housing NT (MAH-NT) for long term management. This was the Territory’s first large-scale community housing transfer – a milestone that reflected months of collaboration and a shared goal of delivering greater outcomes for tenants.
To mark the occasion, MAH invited our Housing Team and tenants from the transferred complexes – Karama, Moil and Millner – to celebrate over anniversary cake at Karama shopping centre and reflect on the incredible journey so far.
Let’s take a look at the past year
Throughout the year, MAH focused on getting to know their tenants, understanding the condition of the assets, reinforcing the importance of paying rent on time, putting payment plans in place when tenants fell behind and assisting with the management of antisocial behaviour in the community.
Key to tackling anti-social behaviour has been local partnerships, with MAH participating daily in the Public Order Patrollers Daily Meeting and working closely with Police and Public Housing Safety Officers, while also extending support to help tenants manage visitors.
To help get to know their tenants, MAH introduced a range of programs. From Midday Maintenance events in the community and Mobile Pop-Up offices at Karama shopping centre, to hanging out at Pizza in the Park gatherings in Jingili – all offered a chance to share insights and create lasting relationships.
The same sense of collaboration continued through more structured initiatives, like:
- Tenant Voice Meeting: a forum, launched in March, offering tenants the opportunity to provide open and honest feedback to MAH
- Tenant of the Month competition: an initiative encouraging tenants to keep their homes and garden tidy for a chance to win a $50 gift voucher. Categories open for nominations include, Making a House a Home, Community Involvement, Achieving Dreams and Quiet Achiever
- Water Play Day at Karama Primary School: a fun session designed for parents to bring their children to play, while staff discuss with them the services and support they can receive during their tenancies.
What a great year it has been – thank you to everyone who has played a part in supporting tenants through this partnership.
