Council member training resources

Under section 45 of the Local Government Act 2019 council members are required to complete training courses about their responsibilities as a council member.

The following governance foundations courses need to be completed by all council members within 12 months of election. The presentations and handouts from each session are available under each heading.

This course provides council members with an understanding of their roles and responsibilities, the business of council, and their strategic role.

The code of conduct outlines the values and standards Councils and Local Authority members are expected to follow. The course also covers what happens when members breach the code of conduct.

This course outlines what is a conflict of interest, how and when to disclose a conflict of interest, and the implications for council of a breach of conflict of interest.

This course looks at what is local government and how it interacts with other governments, where does the money come from and representing and engaging with your community.

This course looks at the before, during and after meetings requirements of councillors and supporting good decision making.
